The shahada — declaring your faith
The declaration of faith (shahada) is what makes a person a Muslim. It has two parts: 'Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah' — 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.'
Your first week
There's no rush. Islam is a marathon, not a sprint — the Prophet ﷺ said 'the deeds most beloved to Allah are those done consistently, even if small' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).
What happens to my past sins?
This is one of the most beautiful mercies in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Islam wipes out what came before it' (Sahih Muslim 121).

Do I need an Arabic name?
**No.** Your name is your name. There is no requirement to change it when you become Muslim.
My family isn't Muslim — what do I do?
The Quran is unambiguous on this. Surah Luqman 31:15 says: 'And if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But accompany them in this world with kindness (ma'ruf).'

Finding a masjid
Every city with any significant Muslim population has at least one masjid, and most are open to visitors. Introduce yourself to the imam — they will almost always welcome you personally, often set up an informal tutor, and connect you with the community.
Take your time
Islam has fourteen centuries of scholarship, four major schools of jurisprudence, thousands of hadith collections, and a language most reverts don't speak. It is normal to feel overwhelmed.
